Malaria is a life- threatening mosquitoe- born disease. It is transmitted by the female anopheles mosquitoes since they feed on blood.the parasite belongs to the plasmodium genus and it is of different types, plasmodium falciparium, vivaux,ovale, malariae and knowlesi.
Falciparium is the most common n deadly especially in the sun Saharan Africa. Malaria is of two types complicated with it's symptoms as severe fever,chills,impaired unconsciousness prostration,anemia.
Uncomplicated has the following symptoms sensation of cold with shivering, fever, headache and vomiting, seizures.an estimated 500 million cases occur yearly with 1-2 million deaths and about 90% occur in sub-saharian Africa.severe malaria is cause by plasmodium falciparium with a mortality rate of 15-20%, 109 countries and territories are affected world wide most prevelent in tropical climate due to its climatic condition.
Treatment, the aim is to eliminate the plasmodium parasite from blood stream, those without symptoms may be treated for infection to reduce the risk of the disease transmission in the surrounding population. Drugs use include, chloroquine, quinine, hydroxychloroquine, Atermeter and lumfantrine, mefloquine clindamycin.
Severe malaria is treated with atesunate injection until when the person is fits to take oral drugs that's after 3days. These drugs work by killing the blood stage of the malaria parasite and consequently prevents the symptoms of the disease. Diagnosis is done through microscopic laboratory testing and rapid diagnostic testing.
Prevented by sleeping under treated mosquitoes bed net, avoid standing water, clear all bushes around your surrounding, those travelling to areas of high malaria incident should take anti malaria before travelling so as to reduce the risk of developing malaria up to 90%. Prevention is better than cure.
